I am trying to get the program to generate automatic sequences for products. I have selected the option in the Base configuration and have made sure that a sequence exists, is linked to the Product document, and I have created a version for the sequence beginning today. But when I create a product, the code line is blank and it tells me that I must input a code to save the document. Perhaps I am not understanding correctly how it is supposed to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sequence and Code are two different fields in product. So even if you define sequence, you have to enter code. The sequence is generated only when you save product with code and other required fields.
